Mark's Story

Mark White's Mum Maureen was a patient at St Peter & St James. Here Mark talks about how St Peter & St James cared for his Mum and her loved ones during her illness.

"If only I could out into words quite how valued and appreciative my family and I were of the care that Mum received; indeed, I have no doubt that Mum herself would have echoed such sentiments. The help and support was shown on two levels - for Mum and for us.

"For us, the family's constant need for information, for updates, for news and for reassurance was never snubbed and never shrugged off. Instead we were dealt with in a way that portrayed a remarkable blend of empathy and professionalism, no matter what time of day or night. Our hearts were always racing, our thoughts and hopes were erratic. We were on a desperate search for answers that weren't there - pestering for a solution that couldn't be found. But we were treated with respect, with compassion and with an honesty that we utterly respected and grew to rely on. The team provided sanity and sanctuary - and oh how we needed both.

"Yet Mum wanted to die at home. She had always declared it. But she ended her time at St Peter & St James. Mum found peace there, and she felt safe. In her final days, her feeling of security and sense of well being was all that my Mum had to hold on to. The team at St Peter & St James gave her that. Quite how the staff manage to instill this in someone so near to the close of their life I don't know, but they did. I'm so very grateful to them. Always will be."
