Volunteering

Volunteering

St Peter & St James is remarkable in so many ways and there is no exception where volunteers are concerned. Around 300 volunteers currently support our work and we are always looking for more. A wide variety of tasks are carried out by volunteers and we rely heavily upon this invaluable support. Without it we simply could not continue to offer our vital services.

Who are the volunteers?

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds, each bringing with them a unique set of skills and experiences. Volunteering can vary from a weekly to an annual commitment and suits students, retired people, parents with school-aged children and anybody who enjoys leading a busy life and helping others!

Why volunteer?

There are many benefits to becoming a volunteer at St Peter & St James including:

  • Socialising and making friends with patients, staff and other volunteers
  • Learning new skills which can be included on your CV
  • Gaining the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a real difference to peoples' lives and giving something back to the local community

What jobs do volunteers do?

Some roles involve working with patients, others are connected with maintenance and administrative work and some focus on supporting patients' carers and loved ones. Some are based at St Peter & St James and others are out in the community for example working in one of our 3 charity shops or being a member of a Fundraising Support Group. All of the roles provide support for patients, loved ones and staff alike.

There are volunteers who help with bed making or laundry and others who regularly take the tea trolley round to in-patients. Others help in the Day Hospice serving lunches, arranging activities and chatting to patients. We also have volunteers who drive the minibus to collect and take patients home and some volunteers who use their own cars to transport patients.

Other volunteers come in to arrange fresh flowers for patients' rooms whilst others help to maintain our beautiful grounds which provide great pleasure for our patients and their loved ones.

We also have volunteers who join our Befrienders Plus service or who become volunteer Chaplains. Combined with our volunteer Counsellors these roles provide vital support for our busy Counselling team.

Of course fundraising is a vital part of life at St Peter & St James and volunteers are always in high demand to help with fundraising events and also to work within our 3 charity shops or to sort donated goods.

As you can see the list is endless! If you have time to spare and are interested in learning more, please contact Christine Sadler, Volunteer Services Co-Ordinator. You can be sure of a warm welcome!
